Most of the time I''m using the end of the cutter (the 1st 20 to 60 thouhs) and when that gets dull, I simply use the bench grinder to hand sharpen the end; grind it back put the reliefs on (without reducing the diameter). For end mills 1/2" in diameter greater, this works well.

This is understandable and whilst I have provided designs for doing this I consider it is only worthwhile if the milling machine is made considerable use of.
Sharpening milling cutters is a vary varied task, the page showing but a few. Photo 1 shows the end cutting edge of an end mill being sharpened with Photo 2 grinding the secondary clearance. The square block holding the cutter is used to index it for the four edges.
These values do though tend to be size dependant being about right for a 12mm end mill but increased a little for large cutters and visa versa. The process of sharpening the secondary clearance is identical to that detailed above but with the rest suitably angled, see Photograph 8, compare this with photograph 1.

Feb 16, 2006· I bought a Darex mill sharpener about a year ago and it works great. Before that I used to touch up cutters with a dremel. The hard ones were when I completely trashed an end and had to start over. Learning to do by hand teaches one alot about tool geometry and reliefs. Same for drill sharpening.
